Sending

Post by Josephine »

On the new online guide - it denotes ratings of people who "sent" in one color verses people who didn't send in a different color. Apparently, if you didn't lead it, it doesn't count as a send.

I would have to agree with this philosophy. In my experience, I do not count a route as being sent unless I have led it clean. I do spray my top rope success , but only as a reminder to go back one day and complete the send.

I also believe that you don't get the full experience of the climb unless you lead it. With all that said, there is nothing wrong with top-roping! :D

Years ago, Fred Nicole in an article said that Top Roping would actually be the future, bc holds were going to get so bad, that you wouldn't be able to let go to clip.

If you successfully go bottom to top and unclip each and every bolt as you go then physically you did just as much as if not more than someone who led and clipped every bolt (I think unclipping is harder than clipping).

If someone says they sent a route I assume they mean they lead it and sent it. Otherwise I would expect them to say "I sent it on TR." There is an obvious difference, but why it would matter much to anyone other than oneself I'm not really sure. Then again I am weak sauce and most of my climbing partners make fun of me and call me a sissy and much less friendly words.
efil lanrete... i enjoy the sound, but in truth i find this seductively backward idea to be quite frightening

The only opinion that matters is your own.
