online guide v4.0: the cafe
Posted: Mon Mar 01, 2010 3:34 am
it's about the time.. not sure when the last time the guide was updated but it's time for v4.. and i'm calling it the cafe because.. well, i can.
i started working on it more than a year ago.. then i got distracted now, though, i'm finally able to wrap this version up.. so i hope you enjoy. i'll be working on v4.1 soon.. but will need to deal with the issues from this version as they come up.
so.. have fun, hope you like it, let me know what issues you run into.
and thanks ray for letting me play with data
the good parts:
-left navigation for faster navigation through regions and walls.
-a whole bunch of charts, most of which are interactive (ie: click on 'em, most should return something)
-dogears.. these essentially let you bookmark pages for quick reference.. but without clogging your browser's bookmarks
-tagging.. you can now add tags that describe the route.
-recommendations.. you can recommend or not recommend routes (essentially, say you like it or not)
-track attempts and see when you made the attempts
-quick spray.. spray from just about anywhere a route is listed
-hide your sent climbs from the wall and search pages
-sort most tables (might get reworked since chokes on large tables)
-new data on the spray tables
-you can spy on people (use it to understand it..)
-on wall pages you can show either a simple table or a descriptive one..
-hover-over picture previews on the wall page
-jump to routes at wall from the routes page (use it to understand what i'm talking about..)
-quick routes.. quickly find climbs based on type and grade from the menu
-reworked advanced search.. might take a little to get used to but i think you'll like it. it will also give you a link so you can save it for future reference..
-auto-suggest on searches
-wall and route access info.. let's you know where you are and who owns it..
-customizable homepage..
-dropped the number of core files from.. maybe 60+ to maybe 10 or so. still need to document them to others to use.. that's to come later (if you're looking at the code, forgive me.. i've learned a lot in a year but i still need to clean up the old stuff)
my favorite parts:
http://www.redriverclimbing.com/RRCGuid ... rview_data
http://www.redriverclimbing.com/RRCGuide/?type=spray
http://www.redriverclimbing.com/RRCGuid ... iew=charts
now, a few disclaimers:
-i and others have tested it and used it as much as possible.. but i promise you there will be issues that you run into. be patient.. i'll get to it when i can, probably after my regular job, coalition, soccer, and boyfriend duties..
-related to above, be nice. it'll get you much further and i won't cut your rope..
-it will probably be a little slow. work with me some.. the next release will probably focus on making it faster.
-if you're using ie6, don't. the online guide won't support ie6 anymore. actually, if you're using ff3.5+, chrome, or safari, you'll probably like it best. there are some cool css3 features that make it look and work best.
again.. there will be issues.. but be patient. and i'm sure i'm forgetting things (both with features and disclaimers) so go discover them..
