What's wrong with people?

Yeah, one of those posts.
I wasn't going to post anything, but I still think about it.
So, people-watching this weekend, I was amazed at number of people who seem to have no clue about life in civilized society.
I was sleeping in the car. Waking up in the morning, I found an empty soda bottle by my bumper. Not mine, but I of course picked it up, intending to throw it away. Then I remembered that I needed to get some things from the car, so I set it back down on the ground, rummaging through my pack, and accidently kicked it over.
As it happened, a guy was passing by. Without thinking twice, he stepped right on that bottle, squashed it, and continued walking.
Umm? Am I the only one who thinks it is rude? Granted, a squashed bottle went into recycling just as well as unsquashed one after I picked it up, but...
And on a related note, I have seen so many people throwing the recyclables into the trash at Miguel's, even though the recycling bins are RIGHT THERE. It is not any more effort, so what the heck?
I think this year is the worst in terms of the mess people are leaving on the tables at the Miguel's shelter, and everywhere else, too. Throwing paper towels in toilets, leaving empty bottles and all their junk strewn about... I don't care if someone is a first-time climber fresh from the gym, this is not about the more esoteric aspects of LNT, this is just basic civilized behavior. Or is it?
