hey there,
i know this is my first post here, but i also post at rc.com, for those who may recognize me.
so i'm planning on coming to the red july 1-6. i'll be coming down with my 4 year old son and meeting some friends from chicago over the holiday weekend.
now i've been warned about the heat/humidity and the approach for a child (but hey, we're from wisconsin and climb at devil's lake, we can deal.
![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)
) i've also been counseled to skip the red for now and head to the new.
so naturally i came to the experts. 8) so, my question is twofold:
- should i come? or is it better to head elsewhere due to the time of year?
and
- anyone free during the week to climb?
thanks,
jen

The terrain here is not well suited for kids to run around unsupervised. As long as you keep a good eye on your kid and he isn't miserable I'd say go for it.
One the other hand, we have poisonous snakes, the humidity is very oppressive at times and I think the deerflies have returned for their summer vacation in the Red. The southeast IS misery in summer.

I cannot think of anywhere I'd rather be than KY in the summer. No sarcasm, I love it. That being said, if you're not used to it, it's oppressive. Also, the deerflies bite and so do the snakes and spiders. I ditto what Wicked Tribe said that unsupervised kids are in danger.

Jen, I have a 6 year old son and we have been going to the gorge for a couple of years. I would be interested in doing some climbing, maybe the boys could entertain eachother. I do both sport and trad, so let me know if you would be interested. Joe

jaylaka,
I would go to the New. Summersville lake rules in the summer, your kid can swim all day while you climb! Temps are usually a little cooler at night which is nice if you are camping and there are lots of other things to do there on rest days!!
But you will still get all the southeast summer treats...snakes, bugs, 95% humity and probably a thunder storm every day!!

well, we are coming to kentucky this week. (but to compromise, i'll hit the new in august).
we'll be camping at miguel's from this tuesday until sunday. so if you see a blue sierra designs tent and a blazer with wisconsin plates, that's us. stop by and say hi.
