Is there still demand for a bouldering gym in Lex?

Post by kato »

With the private gyms that have gone up in the last years, is there still much interest in having a gym in Lexington? What if it were exclusively bouldering?

I think you are actually polling the wrong audience. You will undoubtedly get *some of the Lexington climbers to visit a gym (Bouldering or Rope). If I were starting a chocolate bar company, I wouldn't hold a poll outside of Golden Corral. You know they are going to eat them.

Find out if the local non-climbing clientele would be there. You know, the boy scouts, b-day parties, businesses participating in team building. The stuff that will keep your doors open.

The dirtbags will be there regardless.

Well, a low budget gym could be for this audience. Low-budget meaning bouldering only, warehouse environment, minimal staff, limited hours.

Handling groups would be the next level up and maybe you're right, that's the minimal level for a self-supporting gym. But it would be easier to start smaller and grow it, if it will support itself through that phase.

Sounds like a co-op. PM Kinetic - Tony - and see how the Cbus one is doing...

With the bad economy, I would imagine that we have some warehouses opening up around town. Kipp?

With the number of people who've invested in personal walls (or have free access), a co-op surely won't succeed around here.

I don't think Meadows is correct. Lexington would support a co-op gym. Go for it. You would also get a lot of help.

I'd definetly pony up for a place to train in Lex.

+1 for the return of climbtime to Lexington! If the layout and problems are as good as CT cinci, I think you would do OK. The home gyms are nice, but even Ray and Michelle's isn't as good as a full sized gym all the time. Plus, you don't get as much of the social aspect.
