but this has been really bothering me lately

I have seen numerous posts recently referring to the Red River Gorge as "the Gorge"
It is NOT the gorge, but rather "the Red"

The Red and the Gorge are two different places.

Red River Gorge = The Red (for short)

yes I know its incorrect but as a camper/hiker I and everyone I knew refered to it as "the gorge" as if there was no other because it was the only real destination we knew about. Once i started climbing I learned of the New River George and in order for my brain to cope with these life altering changes I learned to call it the red. Now, its all just muir valley

I always call it the "Red River Gorge Geological area, and other surrounding drainages, such as the Cumberland River Drainage"

It rolls off the tongue nicely.

Sorry Fujie, you have to go by the name locals call an area. You climb Denali and in "The Gorge" not McKinley and in "The Red."

Fuj... When I live in Lexington and didn't climb everyone I knew called it The Gorge. This is the third or forth time this has come up on here.

If you're worried about 'the Gorge' being nondescriptive, you should see the title of your thread.
