Recent thread got me thinking again: do any other "recreational" activities have such a variety of disparaging labels for the beginner/idiot/unskilled/doesn't-have-a-clue participants? Maybe I just have limited viewpoint but other than "hacker" for golf, I couldn't think of any terms used by kayakers, bowlers, skydivers, clay shooters, etc. I even asked some runner friends, they said "no, we just run"
BTW, I'm always too embarassed to leave my harness on, even if it were more convenient - everyone knows I'm gumby forever

Your friends are probably runner gumbies, and just don't know any better...

There are plenty.
Beginning swimmers are called maggots.
Beginning pool players are called chairs.
Beginning hockey players are called whoppers.
Beginning cricket players are called chunks.

Paddlers use Gumby too, there are just less of them because the weaksouss generally drowns. Also, there is no toprope on the river.
Climbing just works better for Nancies.

If you dont know the term or do not know who the gumby is in the room you may need to look in the mirror.

I have finally been acknowledged by SCIN; my life work on RRC is now complete! Of course that precipitates the new challenge of working double time to find climbing partners or else being stuck for life with the likes of the `steak (gee thanks)!
You better watch it SCIN, I’m contagious!
