I started climbing last summer (@ the age of 37
), so please forgive me this question . . .

OK, GumbyJim I'll bite....
Did you clip bolts or plug gear to get the top rope set up?

So a top rope is trad if you plug in pro to make the anchor, and sport if you clip into bolted anchors?
I only ask because most of the guides I've read describe a climb as either trad or sport.
I dunno, I suppose you can really top rope anything, right? The only difference would be that there will be bolts along the climb if its sport?
Maybe I'm just over-thinking things.

Yeah, Jism. trad is where you place your own protection, and sport is a bolted line. You can top rope either, and all top roping is is when the leader has left the rope through the anchors so you don't have to lead it to climb it. I've never heard of slingshot top roping.
Please top rope though your own gear, not the directly anchors, to cut down on wear on the chains, rings, shuts or biners you may find.
Learn how to lead, and try to climb with some more experienced people that can help you get your bearings. Welcome to the sport and good luck.
