Is it worth the money?

This article about the pain NFL retirees have to live with is insane. I guess Friday Night Lights was pretty accurate.

No doubt that football lineman pay a hefty price for their relatively low professional sports salary. I'm also guessing that steroid use is a part of the problem....

My buddy played for Michigan and was an offensive tackle. He was projected to go out in the 2nd or 3rd round but ended up blowing his knee out.. not the typical blow out.. but the kind where he tore his PCL, his hamstring and calf muscle totally off the bone and also partially tore his ACL! It took over a year to re hab. He then went into the canadian league to prove to the NFL his merchandise (knee) was going to be a safe investment.. He ended up doing the exact same thing again 2 months into the season! Long story short.. he never made it to the show and the only thing he has to show for his years and years of hard work is a nasty limp and some serious arthiritus.. He also has broken every finger on both hands multiple times.. He can pull his thumb out of socket at will and bend it like a joystick in any direction. The arthritus he experiences in his body on a daily basis is somewhere in the range of what a 80 year feels. He's 26... Worth it??? not in my book.

Those guys just aren't very smart. If I were that size, and wanted to play football, I'd work my ass off thru highschool and college, and then suck in the NFL. That way I could ride the bench, collect the league minimum and the great benefits, and hopefully never have to play a down.

well, brian brohm is well on his way to doing just that. He doesn't really suck, just undersized for an NFL quarterback, but the point remains, he's making some serious $$$$.

how about being raised in poverty, told that being a professional athlete is one of the only outlets for a future you can hope to acheive, and if not for that future you can look forward to being some form of incarceration or just maintaining the status quo of lower socio economic existence.
I would probably go for it.
