Red River Gorge Climbs states that Tower Rock is closed to climbing. Is this still the case?

Thanks,
Peter

It's open , but I think there are some route closures there. Check with www.rrgcc.org for current closures, or do a search here .

The Forest Service asked (back inthe 90s I belive) that folks limit climbing at Tower. This was because someone's campfire got a little out of control and toasted the vegitation on top. The vegitation has grown back, some book on hiking in the Gorge published a few years ago says there is a trail to the top (?), and climbing has been going on all this time. Like ynot said, the closure is for the boulder. When the bouldering guide was published the FS went ape poo because there is something of cultural signifgance under that thing. The closures don't seem to have effected any routes.

That explains why so many hikers have asked how they can get to the top without climbing gear.

Yeah, I'm thinking is was some book on hiking in the Gorge published in part by the Sierra Club and had some sort of FS stamp of approval on it. Or at least the FS didn't get mad like when a bouldering guide was published. We made fun of it a long time ago on kywilderness which makes me think it was published in 99 or 2000.
