protection from spam

Post by merrick »

ray,

hey are the email addresses on this site protected from spam bots? There is a php script that you might be able to use to encrypt them so they can't be read. i am a little worried about displaying my address if that is going to lead to more spam

there is an article on it and php script here:
http://alistapart.com/stories/spam/
http://www.alistapart.com/stories/spam/encoder.html

and this is a phatty tool for a quick fix:
http://www.hivelogic.com/safeaddress/

funny the things you are thinking about at 5am after staying up coding all night.

Hey Merrick, I modified the board so that you must be a registered user to view the memberlist. That's how most spam bots get the email addresses from these boards (by viewing the memberlist) so it should deter most.

Hey Ray, when I log out and view threads as a guest, I can see email addresses for some posts (for example, mine and Gretchen's - perhaps because we have ours enabled?). You may want to investigate this.

Okay, here's the deal.
Keep "Always show my email address" to "Yes" in your profile.
This is the only way people will be able to reach you via email if they need to. However, you'll notice that in order to email someone it must be done through this board which means you must be a registered user to do so. This option hides your email address at all times yet still allows other users to email you.

Or someone could PM you asking for your email address. This is for your protection from spam.

So, again, it's safe to keep "Always show my email address" to "Yes" now. Check it for yourself. Notice when you hover your mouse over the "email" icon of another user it doesn't show their address.

Good job, Ray! Thanks for taking care of that. Do you wash windows, too? :P
