So I have been kicking around the idea of hiring a trail building/LNT instructor for a day class in the red to help educate our little community on proper low ipact trail building and LNT ethics when it comes to development in the outdoors.

With the amount of develoment (and lack there of in some areas) it seems that a little education on such matters could help us ensure that areas are properly maintained for us and the others who will follow.
(not that the RRGCC and FOMV dont do an awsome job for in maintaining routes and trails!!)

Just wanted to see if there was any interest in this. Odds are most folks would not give up a day for climbing but I know there are some of you who are always at the "trail days" who may enjoy some info on the matter. It never hurts to spread a little knowladge.

Any interest or am I wasting my time? I would love imput on this so I can know if I am dreaming or not

After the Forest Service has made a decision on the LAC Plan and it becomes finalized the Forest Service will be looking to have more trails to climbing areas upgraded to Trail System standards. In the past, when the RRGCC did the trails to Military, Left Flank, etc., a professional trail designer, Jim Angel, was hired to lay out the trails and to instruct volunteers. Mr. Angel has since passed away. Their is definitely a need for this type of training and to hook up with a professional who can assist us.

The Instructor in question was a former director of the ecology lodge at camp cooked creek next to bernheim forest in bullit county. He has implamented several conservation/trail building programs within both parks. He has about 15 yrs experiance as a instructor as well as several masters degrees in these and other areas. (he has been in school as long as I have known him, about ten years now)

He is incredably smart and very eager to share his knowladge. He is working on a course layout and should have it soon. I will post it as soon as I have it.

No shit!? he was a pretty cool old guy - am sorry to hear this.

Well I think every effort helps....however it is a shame that some people won't follow the LNT rules whether they attend the class or not.

I was out at halfmoon with some friends about a month ago. We went out to take some pictures and smoke some uh uh cigars. anyway, we always take a trash bag back there due to the amazing amount of trash that is left by douchbag campers. So we are picking up a campsite along the way when a couple (dude and a chick) walk out with packs on their backs looking like they belonged in the outdoors. They asked us "did you guys camp here last night?" "No" we replied. "Oh then you work for the park service?" "No" we replied again "Then why are you picking up this trash?" Because it needs to be and we are here so....."

They were totally blown away. "well maybe we should carry trash bags too" Like it was some novel fuckin idea!!

Anyway my point is: Some folks may not know better and breeding some education can go a long way.
