Good news for my cams

I dropped 2 cams (they shared a biner) from nearly the top of Whiteout (where you leave the crack). Bounced a few times on the way down, then landed in the dirt.

Magnaflux says:

no cracks. The glowey parts are where I didn't wash the dye off really well (it collects on the cables, and underneath tiny areas really easily). I also fluxed a few biners for a friend that dropped a draw the next day from ~60 ft.[/img]

No,.. I'm just jealous. I wish i could do metallurgical analysis in my lab.

I wish I knew what the hell you were talking about. I'm sure that this means no cracks in the equipment, but how the hell do you interpret that?

Does magnaflux work on aluminum? I thought it only worked on ferrous metals. Or am I just confused? (Years ago I thought I wanted to be an engineer, but that was a long time ago, so I really don't know what I'm talking about.)

I still have the x-ray. the patient survived with only scratches. We dropped it from the top of Synergy and it bounced off a rock at the bottom.

The technique I used is liquid dye penetration. The parts are soaked in a special dye that glows under a black light. I've personally seen the dye penetrate into cracks as small as 10 microns. You then wash the dye off of the surface of the part, apply a developer (which wicks the dye which was in any cracks back to the surface), and look under a light. This will work with pretty much any material.

I think you may have been thinking of magnetic particle inspection, similar technique, and yes, it only works with ferrous materials.
