The Red versus the New

Post by gregkerzhner »

Which one do you guys like more?

The Red
Pros: Lots of routes, all the cool kids are doing it, tall jughalls, miguel's, lots of ego inflating soft routes at muir valley, good concentration of hard climbing
Cons: Everything is a chosspile, every move is the same, miguel's, Andrew, Slade sucks, too many people, no technique required

The New:
Pros: Amazing rock quality, beautiful face climbing, good views of the river, great movement, no Andrew
Cons: Camping is expensive, the routes are run out and sketchy, all the bolts look like they are going to blow, routes require no endurance, not as many hard climbs

Seneca:
Pros: Awesome moderate trad, great exposure, undisturbed scenery, follow/chase the sun, cool history.
Cons: Crowds of gumbie traddies, Camping is expensive, Two food choices, handful of hard sport at most.

Fayetteville WV is a cool little town with lots of good food and drink. Besides Miguel's and TNO, Slade sucks.

The New is way better (even though I've never been there).

Everyone thinking of going to the Red should instead head for the New.

The Red is twice as far from me as the New and I still love the Red more.

I believe the new has more routes. I like the New better. It's the same distance for me to drive to the New as it is the Red. The biggest problem with the New is the rain. It seems to rain there more and when it does there really is no chance to climb. Second is the expensive and or shitty camping. If I had a chance to either live a summer at the New or a summer at Miguels...no brainer. So many more things to do at the New. I say I like the New better but I love the Red for the style of climbing it offers - there's nothing like it in the world.

i think both are perfect compliments to each other. the red will give you the shake out recovery needed and the new gives that power boost the red lacks at times. and the techy nature will shoot holes in the poor footwork that seems to come from jug stomping.

and andrew isn't there so that is a bonus.

i would say the obed is the perfect combo of the two. rock like the new with the steepness of the red.

i'm siding with the red.

the guidebooks for the new are next to worthless.

and you're right, the bolts are all super sketchy, bent anchors, etc...

go to the new to boulder, though.. AWESOME boulders, really concentrated, blows the shit out the red.
