So, i have gotten bitten by the climbing bug and I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about, I'm obsessed with it I took a trip to the red with my girl friend and I wanted to rappel so I went to benchmark outfitters in Cincinnati and bugged the crap out of them there to learn the basics and the about 300 dollars later I had the beginnings of my rack, when I rappelled my first time it was cool but simply got boring, I wanted to feel a sense of accomplishment. When i returned home I called my friend who I know used to climb and has a lot of free time, and told him I was interested in climbing. We started climbing, most of my money goes to gear, gym passes or trips to the Red or John Bryan state park, I loose sleep thinking about it at night, I finally found a hobby I love.
I can climb a 5.8 Maybe on a good day if I'm lucky and the person who rated it was generous haha. But I soon tire out, does anyone know any exercises that will work on stamina? I also lack the upper body strength I need. Are there any good exercises that focus on the muscles used to climb, like grip and upper back? Obviously push ups and pull ups. I can do regular pull ups, but I was at RQ wednesday and on the hang board I could barley get 1 pull up on the big grips. I need something that focuses on climbing muscles. Any suggestions?

BigAl3602, spend more time at rock quest or climb time. john bryan is probably a waste of time if you live in cincy. shoot - it's a waste of time if you live anywhere out side of yellow springs!
hate to tell you this - but it just takes a lot of time to build up the muscle/stamina that you need. but it's a fun process so enjoy the journey.

If you can't get outside all the time, at least get into a gym a few times a week.
When you're there, just start by trying to get as much mileage in as you can. At some point you will want to work in strength excercises, bouldering, etc.
But, like the above posters say, it takes time. Hang in there, there'll be good days, and bad days. But eventually you'll start to see the progress, and you're training will be self guiding (until you plateau...).

the best way to get better @ climbing is to just climb...a three day a week routine should yield some great results, barring any overtraining injuries...watch out for those tendons!!! probably three months or so of dedicated climbing should bring you into solid 5.9 and low .10s....just stick with it!

I just talked to a friend about this last night. I agree, climb with people who climb harder than you. You will learn a ton about technique and much much faster than figuring it out on your own.Saxman wrote:Climb with people who are better than you. Instant ticket to improvement or a crushed ego.
I think RQ has technique classes as well that might help accelerate the process.
