An armed society is a polite society.

Who was it that said that? I forget, but it looks like even the British are beginning to figure that out. The following is from the BBC.

"Despite the fact there are more than 200 million guns in circulation, there is a certain tranquility and civility about American life.

Brits arriving in New York, hoping to avoid being slaughtered on day one of their shopping mission to Manhattan are, by day two, beginning to wonder what all the fuss was about. By day three they have had had the scales lifted from their eyes.

I have met incredulous British tourists who have been shocked to the core by the peacefulness of the place, the lack of the violent undercurrent so ubiquitous in British cities, even British market towns.

"It seems so nice here, they quaver."

It is a paradox. Along with the guns there is a tranquillity and civility about American life of which most British people can only dream.

What surprises the British tourists is that, in areas of the US that look and feel like suburban Britain, there is simply less crime and much less violent crime. "

Heh, so much for the effectiveness of draconian British gun control laws. In Montana, and I suspect many other states, if some young punk decided to try to emulate his British cousins and go all Clockwork Orange, somebody would likely shoot his dumb ass. Amazing what a calming influence that has. Of course that's not true in "gun free zones" where passive victimhood is the only "correct" response.

I think europeans fight more...like old school beatings and fist fights. That doesn't happen much in the US anymore because somebody usually pulls a gun...

Having no guns seems like a good idea, but I guess if everybody has a gun then only a few people can be killed at any one time before the problem fixes itself...

I'm probably biased though cause I caught a little bit of a death wish marathon the other day...lol

I dunno...Afghanistan is and always has been pretty well armed..Is that a low violence area?

Not that I'm anti second amendment or anything, but attributing magical properties to gun ownership ( human stupidity being what it is ) is pretty fallacious..

I don't know how much you should allow tourist to dictate gun control policy. sounds a bit like you are confusing correlation and causation. Hey I didn't get mugged on a three day trip to NY must be a really safe country that is until they bring their kids over enroll them in a school where a group of kids who get picked on all the time decide they've had enough bring dads "two or three" guns to school and shot the poor British kid in math class along with twenty of his class mates. How safe would it seem then.

I'd be interested in how many deaths to violent crimes there are in the U.S. v.s. the Brit's? What if they have a higher violent crime rate but a lower violent death rate.

I kinda think "dukeing it out" is better the pulling a gun....... just a thought.

Same question has occurred to me. I was so shocked to come across anything from the BBC that was even vaguely pro-american or pro-gun that I had to share it. And yes, I enjoy the shooting sports.

From Bob Owens, via Instapundit:

Fifty-four shootings in two weekends. Shot-up bodies recovered in groups of three and five. Is this Ramadi? Basra? No.

Welcome to Chicago.

Note the fruits of gun control. Plus this on the Chicago P.D.'s up-armament: "If the department arms 10,000 of their officers with M4s, the police will have 9,900 more assault rifles in Chicago than the U.S. Marines presently have in Fallujah, Iraq."

Shit man, it is ILLEGAL to possess an unregistered handgun in Chicago. It has not been possible to for the average citizen to register a handgun in Chicago since 1982. As a result, only the lawless, cops, and politically connected mucky mucks have handguns. The problem is that THE LAW mandates that law abiding victims remain unarmed, while violent criminals give not a fuck that they carry illegally. Anytime the LAW shifts the balance of power away from the lawful and toward the armed and lawless, you'll have more violent crime. Human nature, and Economics 101. http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/cops-may-g ... icagostan/

i like that bumper sticker that says "gun control means hitting your target"

word to that...

guns aren't the problem, people, and their inherently moronic nature that is the problem...
