I've seen it suggested before (for RRGCC, maybe) but I think that tiny "annual" stickers would help raise some decent money. Kind of like the ones you put on your car's license plate every year. I can imagine a bunch of them on bumpers and nalgenes.. sort of like a badge of honor. Now that it's so cool to be a RRG "local", who wouldn't want something like this? $30 each is fair.

Also for out of town people who come once or twice a year you could charge them 5 dollars to park on weekends. That way you are not charging people to climb just to park.

There are potential liability issues resulting from mandatory user fees, due to the Kentucky Recreational Use Statute. This is why many have recommended charging for parking specifically, and leaving climbing free of charge--perhaps even a separate organization to manage the parking lot in order to separate climbing from parking. This is especially important at Muir with its ridiculously high rate of accidents, although the actual legal implications of such a policy are far from clear.

This has been gone over before, but I believe that under Kentucky law, if a private landowner charges users for use of their land, they are more responsible/liable for accidents, or something like that? There are other climbing areas in other states that are on private land that do charge money, either for maintenance/upkeep (Reimer's Ranch in Texas until a couple years ago), and others charge for climbing purely for profit (HCR in Arkansas, Crawdad Canyon in SoUtah), and I think the laws vary state-to-state. I will say that I have never seen another privately owned climbing resource like Muir, where the owners invested thousands of their own dollars into it, but did not charge a user fee.

As Cleveland mentioned above, though (and as many others have asked over the past few years), I still wonder why a parking fee is not charged for revenue. I'm not sure if the Weber's have decided against it for legal/liabiity reasons, or practical/logistical reasons, but it would seem like this would be a great way to get some money. Just to reiterate what I said upthread: barring a huge grant of money from some non-profit like the Access Fund, donation-collecting for Muir Valley is going to HAVE to get more coercive for it to be sustainable.

If Webers agree, going to seek professional opinion on charging for parking from legal liability perspective and put this debate to rest. Also going to look at "Pay and Display" meter for costs and expected return on investment.
