I don't know what it is built out of--I'm not building it. I am just psyched that it will be here. Check it out if you come to Atlanta.
It will host international comps too. Mainly--i'm excited about how tall and steep the walls are going to be.
Dustonian--What's wrong with offering free cross-training opportunities? What does that have to do with Chipotle? You are too cool to do cardio workouts?

Nothing inherently "wrong" with it, I just find it humorous, that's all. Gyms in San Francisco and Denver area are huge corporate enterprises and have been offering yoga, spinning, kickboxing, all kinds of fruity shit for many years... just as comical there as it is anywhere. IMO--just go for a run or hey, a bike ride for Chrissakes! The climbing lifestyle for me is more about being outside in beautiful places with good friends than being "athletic"--climbing gyms are just an unfortunate necessity when the weather is bad or you have a job and want to stay in shape for... actual climbing!

When people suck at climbing, they try to tear it down any way they can. Looks like an awesome place to climb and train, but I hope that Escalade will still succeed. I really like that place and the things they are doing with their youth team.

yeah... a cross-training gym is one that will succeed, no doubt. the model they have in san francisco is like that, with weight rooms and yoga and everything... not to mention bitchin climbing walls. also, there's like 6 of them in the friggin city

That's kinda what I thought. Anyway, it isn't a huge corporate enterprise, it's a local climber who is building it. He is super nice and climbs really hard (all around the world) and is trying to make a world class climber's gym. I admire anyone in their 20's willing to take on such a large project to benefit climbing.
I think Escalade will be fine--it's a good gym and it is on the complete other side of the city--an hour away. The only reason I don't go there a lot is because it takes to long to get through Atlanta traffic. Atlanta Rocks Intown will also survive I think.
Dustonian--you sound like those football players from the 1960's who thought weight training was gay ("we just need to come out and play football!"). Really, where would football be without weight training?

Ooo OOoh! Since everyone else who also hasn't pitched a dime in yet feels entitled, here is my 2 cents too!
The inside of the free standing boulder will be hollow and the hosting place for cage matches! People pick fights on rrc.com, get all butt hurt, and take it to the cage! Then the chicks or dudes in hot pants can wear them to announce the round numbers... Does anybody on here have that sweet "monster jam yelling voice" down?... Oh man its all coming full circle now! I cant wait til this thing is open! My sense of entitlement has grown exponentially via this post!

Climbing is gay. Bouldering is more gay. Climbing gyms are even more, more gay. Its just the level of gayness that you're comfortable with. Right now, with this gay-ass-attack weather we're having. I would drive To Lexington FROM the Red. For the chance to pass out handjobs in the parking lot of a climbing gym.
