Some good points made, but the rednecks are just living by the Boy Scouts' Motto. Be prepared.

Make no mistake about it, we went through a peaceful revolution less than 15 months ago when America elected it's furthest left president in history. Realizing the magnitude of that error the electorate may now be swinging the other way. Just maybe that's how our system is designed to work. I think it would take a hell of a lot more than our current problems to bring the system down. Let's pray that doesn't happen.

I dont think that the Amerikan electorate understood just exactly what they were getting when they elected Mr. Obama. He wasn't marketed as "the furthest left president in history". I think now people are having "buyers remorse". I think they are just now realizing that the emperor has no clothes. I think he's in over his head and I hope he has enough about him to rely on the bureaucrats in place to help him with policy decisions. If he trundles ahead with this "remake Amerika" agenda, I only see disaster. People can smell this in the air. Thats why there's all this fear out there.

Disagree - First I know lesbians drive Subarus (not conservative), but the STi had 350 Hp and it sucked gas. It transcended politics. And yes, you can call me out on driving a “clean dieselâ€
I've been a gumby longer than you've been climbing.

Clevis - Again, many good points made. Obama pulled off one of the slickest bait and switch campaigns ever. Just don't underestimate the self correcting nature of American democracy.

Its been my studied observation that typical "conservatives" are better armed i.e. guns and military grade weapons, camoflage. They are more likely to have some military service under their belt and may or may not be aware of the current political enviroment. Basically they ignore the process until their lifestyle is interrupted. Then they go shoot whatever is messing up their groove.
Now the "liberals" are not as well armed (it goes against one of the basic tenets of the faith to have arms in the hands of ordinary civilians, they want the goverment to do all of the "policing") When they, the liberal/marxist/socialist/ persons other than conservatives, strike, they strike with bombs not guns.
Irregardless, whoever pulls the "trigger" first. Do you have a plan? I do. Its get the F out of all the major citys and be ready for some serious rioting. L.A. will burn. All of Detroit, Atlanta, New York,Okland, you name it. All major cities will be on fire. The Country will go into serious "lockdown" mode.
I think the 2010 elections will be scary. I think that there are people who are biding their time waiting for the election results and if Amerika doesn't reverse its current course then they'll do something. I am not basing this postulation on any particular conversation, just on a general feeling that I get from all of the conversations that I have had over the last two years. People are Pee'd off. I was in a gun store the other day and a guy came in and bought $1100 worth of 5.56. It happens almost every day since the 2008 elections. You can't find a good sorce of ammo. It all gets bought up. People are scared, and thats what scares me the most!
Detroit is already burning. Up in Michigan, we called that "the weekend".

I get what you are saying. My wife has an uncle who professes the same thing, and frankly, it is something I've thought about. When we left northern Michigan, I told my wife I was a bit leery of leaving because we had an isolated house , well away from anything, surrounded by national forest, a clean water source (a natural spring in our back property), tons of food (the deer and turkey population in N. MI is enormous. Michigan's annual deer kill by hunters is almost as large as Kentucky's entire herd!) and lots of trees for firewood. Should anything happen, political or natural disaster, we could hold up well there.

I don't know if anything will happen in my lifetime that would be considered a major alteration of civilization, but I doubt it will take longer than my children's lifetime. Too many people on earth, nowhere near the necessary resources. It took roughly 1 million years of human evolution to reach a population of 1 billion. It only took an additional 200 years to go from 1 billion to 6 billion. Yikes. One projection by the United Nations has world population doubling again by 2065. We are running out of agar on our petri dish!

I think the fear is based on self-determination. When people feel like they are at the helm of their own life and that they control their own destiny then they are content. Hence all the content people who live in trailers and have a yard full of shite. They are comfortable because they feel self-determined.
.....now back to more important matters.... So what about Giardia and Chryptosporidia. I don't think that Chlorine kills it. What sort of filter do I run to get rid of this. Cholera, And what about chemicals. I'm kinda looking for a system. It has to be relatively small. It can weigh some but I have to be able to lift it by myself. Any one have any experience in this?

Clevis,

Boiling for long enough (minutes) kills everything.
Sufficient chlorine for long enough time(possibly hours) kills everything.

Most, maybe all, filters do not remove viruses. Filters are a pretty good choice for making "pure" mountain streams safe. If you find yourself having to take your water from a more suspect source, like the Kentucky River, I'd recommend you filter then boil. If you're on the move, being pushed, and haven't got time or fuel for any of that chlorine might be your best option. Make sure you give it enough time to work, based on water temperature.
