gotta agree with fucking muggle... right now i am reading a book about politics and the self-interest theory (ha ha, by feldstein if anyone is interested....), and i have to say i agree it's pretty accurate to say that everything is done for self-motivated gains. the civil war was not about upholding principles in the south... it was about cost-effectiveness and maintaining cash crops.

furthermore (and forgive me, i am just catching up with this thread), no one gets away with proudly bearing swastika flags and declaring "German pride." bottom line, i think the confederate flag is a symbol of bigotry, and i find it hard to believe there's not a better way to display pride for southern heritage.

If slavery was so unimportant, then why, when the Confederacy was 'editing' their version of the Constitution, did they have to repeatedly insert language to support it. Why did they intensify slavery in the 'DNA' of their would-be nation? Also, just because slavery was economically harmful to poor whites, it seems that they still fought to defend it.

To say the civil war had nothing to do with slavery is about the same as saying the crisis in the middle east has nothing to do with oil. There are other factors of course but thanks to all of your extensive historical knowledge I feel defeated and must say "ok, the CW was mainly about slavory". In that case then, those good confederate flag toting fellas in their trucks really are superpatriot, bigot, rednecks who want to bring back slavery, assuming they are trying to support the confederacy. Well, my argument was much milder but thanks for opening my eyes to the extent of my origional argument.

I'm sorry but this is such bullshit. Most blacks in this country are no more than four generations removed from slavery meaning that those relatives had less than nothing. Since the Civil War, blacks have been blocked by Unconstitutional laws from owning property, voting, or any kind of equal rights. first off Alan i'm sure that some of those laws were voted on by friendl northerners as well. it's just easy to stereotype the south.
secondly.... and this is the big one asshole. don't claim my relatives. first off my family is not too far off the boat from germany and other fine european countries, (immigrants who were also mistreated and hated) they were poor, salt of the earth folks, who lived up in Pennsylavania and other "non-racist" states. if there is such a thing. neither one of my parents are racist, as my father dated a black woman before he married my mom.
