If you were coming in the fall,
I'd brush the summer by,
with half a smile and half a spurn,
as houswives do a fly

If I could see you in a year,
I'd wind the months in balls,
and put them each in separate drawers,
until the time befalls.

If only centuries delayed,
I'd count them on my hand,
subtracting till my fingers dropped
into Van Diemen's land.

If certain when this life was out
that yours and mine would be,
I'd toss it yonder like a rind
and taste eternity.

But now, all ignorant of the length
of times uncertain wing,
it goads me like the goblin bee
that will not state its sting.

Emily Dickinson, my favorite poem by my favorite poet whom my 1st born is named after.

And one more by her:

He fumbles at your spirit
As players at the keys
Before they drop full music on:
He stuns you by degrees,

Prepares your brittle substance
For the ethereal blow,
By fainterhammers, further heard,
Then nearer, then so slow

Your breath has time to straighten,
Your brain to bubble cool.-
Deals one imperial thunderbolt
That scalps your naked soul.

I always liked Thomas Hardy's novels growing up, and only later discovered his poems.

Channel Firing

THAT night your great guns, unawares,
Shook all our coffins as we lay,
And broke the chancel window-squares,
We thought it was the Judgement-day
And sat upright. While drearisome
Arose the howl of wakened hounds:
The mouse let fall the altar-crumb,
The worms drew back into the mounds,
The glebe cow drooled. Till God called, "No;
It's gunnery practice out at sea
Just as before you went below;
The world is as it used to be:
"All nations striving strong to make
Red war yet redder. Mad as hatters
They do more for Christés sake
Than you who are helpless in such matters.
"That this is not the judgment-hour
For some of them's a blessed thing,
For if it were they'd have to scour
Hells floor for so much threatening...
"Ha, ha. It will be warmer when
I blow the trumpet (if indeed
I ever do; for you are men,
And rest eternal sorely need)."
So down we lay again. "I wonder,
Will the world ever saner be,"
Said one, "than when He sent us under
In our indifferent century!"
And many a skeleton shook his head.
"Instead of preaching forty year,"
My neighbor Parson Thirdly said,
"I wish I had stuck to pipes and beer."
Again the guns disturbed the hour,
Roaring their readiness to avenge,
As far inland as Stourton Tower,
And Camelot, and starlit Stonehenge.

Listening to my favorite band...I notice the words in one of my favorite tunes for the first time. I must've heard this song 500 times but I never paid attention to what she was actually saying. I thought I'd share it.

there's so many things that we miss in our everyday lives
we're so busy hustling bustling chasing faraway dreams
we forget the little things
like blue skies, green eyes and our babies growing
like rainbows, fresh snow and the smell of summer
we forget to live

give us eyes like children so we live each day as our first
we're so sure we know so much that we forget to listen
then we want the fickle things
like cheap thrills, fast pills and constant consumption
like CDs, TVs and cars that speak our name
we forget to live

there's so many things that we miss in our everyday lives
we're so busy hustling bustling chasing faraway dreams
we forget the little things
like blue skies, green eyes and our babies growing
like rainbows, fresh snow and the smell of summer
we forget to live

Man, some good stuffs been posted here. From lyrics of G-love and Keller to Lincolns inaugural address. Favorite quotes from favorite authors like Bukowski, Hesse and Castaneda. I dig it and I'm reading it.

But yeah, it also feels good to share something you find meaningfull, even if it isn't your own words.

Personally I really like "Channel Firing" posted above - thats a good one! I'd steal a sig line from the end, but it just wouldn't be the same out of context. Can you guess which line?

fair enough...I'll go back in my hole.

I didn't realize that lyrics to songs were "meaningful"..I just thought they became that way when they hit each of us on a personal level. I wonder if songwriters are truly trying to teach the world, or just trying their durndest to make a living. I know, I know....probably both.

you're probably somewhat right though. It's sure fun to click that submit button, and posting someone elses words just gives you more ops to do so
