nik, where did you come from, a gym?
Just wondering as where new(er) climbers come from might be the perfect place to try to educate before they come to the red.

Both climbing gyms and universities don't really make that a priority. Hell, they still guide trips to crags where it's not allowed.

from a gym, yeah. it seems there could be more done by the gyms in the region. hoosier heights did a benefit comp for muir and i'm not sure how much they raised, but i'm sure it wasn't trivial. they also have a donation box for muir in the gym (not sure how much that's produced). pressuring gyms to help would also have the added benefit of identifiable people (gym owners, managers) to lean on. maybe some would have the attitude that it's not their problem, but i would guess many would be willing to help!

Most gym owners are not really interested in making money for a crag that is most likely hundreds of miles away. Most are just worried with trying to stay financially solvent. However, I think that key climbers at those gyms could spearhead the effort with the gym owners permission. I think it would be great if we could make it the standard that anyone taking out newbies at Muir lets them know about the expected donation and to make sure you have $5 with you when you walk by the box. First we need a clear message, then we can spread that message.

Every time I guide in Muir, I recommend a donation on our way back out of the valley. I haven't had anyone yet not give, just based on a recommendation. Some have even dropped 20's in there. It's all about letting people know.

There's been a big demographic shift in the origin of RRG climbers to its present state. I'd say that today's average RRG climber is pretty well represented in the Miguel's pizza line during spring break season. Most have never been to this website, and are pretty detached from the issues.

I have what I think is a simple suggestion. Remove the opt out for emails from the MV registration page and amend the legal release to require that you agree to receive emails as a condition of access. In addition to providing email messages to users about operating costs/donations, safety information updates could also be provided.

i would love to receive the emails being sent about operating costs.
