Is that really any sillier than red tagging routes in the first place? When we play games like these, there are always going to be wacky exploits of the system.

Shamis, You are the kind of people that suck the fun out of new routes / rebolting / trailwork, etc. The ability to do the routes you put the work into on your own terms and time frame seems like such a small thing to ask, but I guess there will be bottom feeders in every pastime.

Shamis would be the person to throw a rope down in front of someone and start up a route while they were tying their shoes or their belayer is getting their belay device off their rack. Not illegal, but rude, childish, asinine, and showing complete disrespect for your fellow climber.

Some thoughts from the Redtagging thread I dug up that still ring true to me.
Toy wrote:It's says a lot about the sad state of this sport that this discussion is even taking place. Developer don't put those red tags up to remind themselves they haven't done the route. 1800+ routes and people still feel the need to pluck that one cherry just outta reach. Sad.

I took particular note of the credibility these people have in the Red. You don't know them, you're junior varsity.

......some people were raised right, have good manners, and know how to respect others. Some people are shit heads.

Wow, that's interesting. By thinking that red tape sucks I ruined all your fun. Amazing powers I have.

At least I don't try to kill people at the crag.

How about routes at the upper end i.e. 14+. There are not that many established, and its not that easy to find good ones. So it's concievable that a person could climb all of the hardest climbs around, then be held back from establishing more by a bunch of red tags. It is good for the sport and for the Red to have a bit of friendly competition.

My opinion is that 1 year is way too much time. 1 month seems closer to fair.

Bolting a route is fun. It's hard work in the same way that boning Angelina Jolie is hard work. You might work up a sweat but it doesn't mean that Brad Pitt can't kick your ass for it.

"No Brad, really, look at how much I sweated getting her ready for you."

Actually, I have never failed at trying to kill someone, but it looks like you are doing a good job at painting a big red x on your back.

schwag....I am not sure "held back" is the appropriate term....again, I merely ask for those against red tagging. please put in the work on 10, 20, 20 or more routes, and then see if you feel the same way....

and about a year being too long..no way man...I bolted a 5.11 for my wife, and she took off to pursue her masters degree, and her climbing slipped to where 5.11 was project mode. She took maybe 6-10 burns over an 8 month period, and I'd have given her another 2 years if she wanted it.
