Just so this doesn't get lost in the debate- The East But is a cool route. Is it pitch 11 that is so bad ass? (it has been prob twenty years). The one where you traverse out to the right and head up this wall of knobs with fully 1000 ft under your feet. It might be 5.7 but totally awesome. Everyone should do it.

found it in writing so i though i would be kind enough to share it with you all.

Camp 4, By Steve Roper, Page 51:

"Yet the East Buttress--not really part of the main El Cap face--..."

it goes on to talk about how the FA's of the East Butt did not consider it an el cap climb.

the book also talks about harding doing the 1ST ACCENT OF EL CAPITAN.

i just though i would let you all know and help to enlighten you a bit. please save all the thanks, i dont want this thread to get to out of control.

So Rick did the East But. Did he do the 10b move off of the 2nd belay or pull on the fixed gear....? Inquiring minds want to know.

No not at all, i know nothing about el-cap, much less what is considered el-cap proper or not. Though I would one day like to climb in the valley.

I just am amazed you could remember an old argument so well.
