Ray, first of all the on-line guide is a great idea! However, I am curious about your motivations. Are other first ascentionist as interested as you to publish their new routes regardless of location? I've had no problems finding out about new routes. We all seem to know who is doing what. I don't understand your need to publish. Would you be doing this if you had no routes of your own to publish? Are you doing it because you don't like someone? Is it revenge? Is it because you can? Are you doing it for your 15 minutes? Are you bored? Do you just want to stir things up? Will it make you feel better about yourself? Is there a public demand for publication? Is it the right thing to do? Is it the right time to do it? Is there really a need? If it does cause problems with the land managers, will it have been worth it?
My guess is that it would be OK with your public if you didn't publish. THINK ABOUT IT! SOBER!

Plus, there's about a year's worth of guidebooks left. What happens when they're gone? You probably don't care because you're part of the tight-knit buddy buddy locals only climbing club. But remember when you didn't know shit about the Red. You probably sat home at nights stroking it to John's guidebook just as we all did.

It's a dumb question to ask why someone would write a guidebook. You're dealing with about every crag in the world when you ask that question.

jeez ray, why the hell did you not just put the "bad" routes in there and not mention it to anyone. there is no way the forest service or anyone else would of sat down and compared the guidebook to an online database and looked for discrepancies. that way anyone looking for the routes would find them and a bunch your friends wouldn't be pissed off at you.

now with all this hype tons of people are making a fuss about it.

I suggest you delete this whole thread and do what you feel is right. if nobody says anything, no one will ever notice 20 new routes out of thousands. especially if they are trad routes.

Come on, you think that would slip by the RRGCC members? I guarantee I'd get an email from at least one of them the day after I put the routes in.

but who cares about an email. if climbers get upset and don't go public the FS and other groups will never know. i mean these groups probably don't own guidebooks or would know how to use them even if they did. it is only when climbers are making a big deal out of things that other people will notice. I mean climbing would probably barely registered on the public's radar if climbers were not bolting, debolting, bolting, debolting, getiing in fist fights and trying to send each other to jail in the early 80's.
