i see you have run yourself in a circle. maybe i can help.
the smacking and clapping sounds were not a figment of your imagination, but they came from the rope side, not the brake hand. that's why you kept getting short-roped. so now you have 2 excuses!

the fear of penalty slack as a result of the previously mentioned short-roping of brentucky.

my belayers are perfectly incompetent with their rappel devices and prefer to use them over the grigri because it saves weight on the approach and allows them to carry an assortment of trad gear they have no intention of using
