You're right, Andy, and I understand and accept this fact and choose to climb with the distractions. No biggie. I don't want to turn this into a "kids at gyms" thread, I was only laughing at Artsay's remark about no kids at LR.
Spuzo, CT is not much better, if at all, because, as Andy said, gyms make their money from parties/groups.
My only gripe (as is always the case), is that there were some 6-8 kids upstairs without adult supervision (aside form Sik and myself) and THAT is where the problems were allowed to escalate. There is a fine line between letting kids play and "be kids" and having them be a nuisance and troublesome

Hey Artsay, these kids were easily below 13 and it was pretty chaotic up there. I started having flashbacks of the old Climb Time!

Rainman... I do alot of climbing at the gym here in E-ville. I think there has been like 3 days all year that I've climbed and not seen anyone under 13 in the facility. Even on the days when there is not someone under 13 in the facility, there is a group of loud and obnoxious 35 year olds!
Got to love capitalism.

[quote="spuzo"]RS had auto-belays on nearly every rope
I just want to be clear on this. RockSport doesn't have auto-belays on any rope. Their main top ropes have gri-gris. There are several other top ropes that are available on the more difficult routes/overhung walls that don't have them. On these, you would just use your own belay device.
With regard to lead routes, there several bolt lines heading up several walls. Most of these walls also have top ropes on them as well.
I appreciate the input from those who come to visit since I then can pass this information onto the guys that work there. It would be my goal to make it an "enjoyable" climbing experience for climbers of all levels. If they aren't happy, they don't come back, the gym doesn't make money and will eventually close. I don't want this to happen to the gym I'm climbing at.

Sorry bout that GWG - thanks for correcting...didn't mean to put out incorrect info.
when I said auto - i meant gri-gri - my fault.
I had a good climbing experience there all around...the people were really nice. Josh, I think that was his name, at the desk was a great help.
I did see the bolt lines on several walls now that you mentioned it, but I was just top-roping, so I guess blocked them from my memory

Here's a Q. Does anyone know of a gym that allows the use of auto-belay devices on their top-ropes? Say I don't have a climbing partner, but I DO have a cool Petzl Microcender rope grab, would I be allowed to hook myself into a top-rope with my microcender, climb and then lower myself off the route (because THAT would make my day).

Hey GWG,
Rocksport kicks ass. I loved the climbing up there, but ESPECIALLY the main lead wall. The TR routes they have go from 5.easy to 5.whatthehellamIdoingonthis and they are cool. I definitely have to get back up there soon.

Hey Spuzo,
I was at RQ leading last night w/that horn blowing party! We did make a comment to mgmt. Weekends are always more busy w/kids but on Sun. after 6 pm things usually settle down. However, now that it is holiday season and kids will be getting off school, expect more of them at the gym.

My youngest son self belays himself fairly often when we climb at Rocksport. He'll set up a rig similar to what I've used in mountaineering and have a ball. He knows not to ask me if the gym is crowded.
Are you speaking of those "Tiblocks"? If it is, does it work well?

I'm with you, Rain Man. I don't mind kids being there except when they are running around unsupervised and being a nuisance. Saturday we went to CT-Cinci and had to deal with kids stealing our chalk bags. I've never known kids to be a nuisance at LR.
