Here's an interesting one:
A very recent study (June 2003) shows clearly that Private Land Owners are responsible for 75% of closing. I don't mind gambling a little, but not when I know most odds are against me.
On a different note:
We have paper route guides, we have online route guides, and they are all going to get better and better to the point that you cannot miss the entrance of the crag. So, the fact is: more people will arrive and climb, or more will simply arrive and hike on by to watch. The point is MORE PEOPLE.
Having said that, it's not about banning people (climbers, hikers, viewers) from The Red. Placing appropriate signage will help keep most people on trails - thus reducing erosion.
Educating 1, 2, 3, and 4 legged should be sought after - because wether we want it or not, they are coming. I have seen this happening too many times elsewhere: Hanauma Bay (Hawaii) where you can't even dive there any more... unless you drive through down-town to get a permit. Come on! That's drastic measures I would hate to see in KY.
