yeah, I get PO'd when I hear that, too, junior. Personally, I like to hear other languages spoken. Aside from that, what people don't seem to understand is that it's very difficult for adults, especially older adults, to learn a new language. It would be cool if people would be kinder about this stuff.
The real irony to me is that the same people who bitch about immigrants and foreign languages spoken in the good ole U S of A will often travel to other countries and not even try to learn any of the language or cultural courtesies, much less appreciate the culture. The "ugly American" label is often well deserved. I've seen it myself when observing Americans in other countries. It makes me want to claim to be Canadian when I travel.
Before anyone throws a tantrum, I'm not slamming all Americans, just the stupid MF's who want it both ways: American-only here, and American-only everywhere else.

BTW, my daughter has a new friend from the Ukraine. She hasn't been here very long but speaks beautiful English. She was over last night for dinner and I encouraged her to always practice her native language (Russian) and to never stop, or she'll forget it. I told her how important I think it is for her to hold onto the customs and traditions of her culture even though she is an American now. She said her parents agree. I personally believe that learning from people from different cultures enriches us as individuals.
I'm hoping to learn a few choice Russian phrases from her mom so I can yell them at a cliff near you soon.

good point its often refered to as the Protesant work ethic, thats the common name and isn't meant to to exclude other denominations or even I suppose atheists but it does imply America's greatness is based on the hard working men and women who immigrated here or were born here who work hard for their families, communities and country. all "legal" immigrants will hopefully continue to strive for their version of the American dream- for the others what part of "illegal" is the complicated part?
Perhaps it's the part where they can substantially better their lives and the lives of their families simply by committing a non-violent crime which doesn't directly harm anyone. Hmm, make my life better by taking a risk and working hard, or follow some rule I had no say in and be really, really poor? I can't be mad at any individual who makes that choice.
