How can you say belief is not good enough for a response as to why we should or should not abolish the death penalty. There are a whole bunch of people willing to strap explosives to they're bodies and sacrifice themselves over a belief. I believe thousands of Knights were killed for a belief. Granted, we vote our "beliefs", but most laws, precedents, and statutes, are what we believe to be right and just. After all, these laws are usually decided after much debate, based on perceptions that come from the "beliefs" of the lawmakers themselves. I'm not up to speed on how this works, but I "BELIEVE" this was not an easy thing to decide (death penalty) for anybody who was involved, unless it was those knuckle draggers you know......
Belief is a personal thing. You live your life according to your beliefs. That's fine. But making laws based on one group's beliefs is bad. Rational people should be able to agree on logical arguments (like those in the report). You may still believe that some people deserve the death penalty but I think most rational people would agree with the report's conclusions that the death penalty is bad law... if they actually read the thing. Many people believe we should not teach evolution in science classes but should teach their interpretation of the Bible. Many people believe that sex education leads to more sex despite the fact that every study shows it reduces early sex, unwanted pregnancies, and STDs. Belief makes for bad law. You are free to believe what you want, be it spaghetti monsters or creationism, but you shouldn't be able to force those beliefs on others. The continued use of the death penalty is based on the belief that it has an impact on crime but the fact is that it has no effect on crime. Better social conditions and active rehabilitation programs reduce crime, both things that the neocons fight against like they're some kind of cursed invasion of armed communists.

Shit AE, I just wrote a too long piece on what I think of the minimum wage (It's destructive market manipulation). Drugs (Do whatever you like, just don't harm others). And the death penalty (lock up murders and throw away the key). Pretty typical neocon, I guess.

I'm sorry you didn't get to see the whole thing. You'd been righteously steamed. Apparently I took too long, as I got an "invalid session" message. Oh, well.

"But making laws based on one group's beliefs is bad."

That is, um, YOUR belief....

Millions of laws and decisions are based on beliefs, not science. It is really a matter of "who's" beliefs we use to enact those laws.

AE, give me any area of life in America, and I will give you a law based on a belief. In fact, I will give you a law based on a liberal's belief, so you will shut up.

Millions of laws? Most laws are based on logic and reason. Like not passing where there's a solid line, obeying traffic lights, anti-smoking regulations, building codes, you know, the things that make daily life safer for all of us. The worst laws we have are based on belief instead of logic, reason, or science, like the "three strikes" laws, harsh drug violation sentences, anti-abortion laws, and the death penalty. Most laws are enacted because there is a problem that needs a legal solution. I know you neocons like to pretend you're all libertarian and hate laws but your life is made better by logical rules every day. The neocons have been wrong and the enactment of their belief system has proven it doesn't work that way. It doesn't matter how often you repeat yourself, if reality disagrees with you, you're wrong.

Dammit. It would've been nice to see you agreeing with me (except on the minimum wage).

sorry..thousands of laws...

out of the 15 things you mentioned in your last post, not a single one of them was implemented by a "neocon", whatever a neocon is (it is merely a buzzword created and abused by the left to try and create a negative vibe...) these laws were all implemented before the word neocon was even in use by you pseudo metrosexuals posing as intellectuals.

what anti abortion laws are you talking about? it is legal last time I checked. partial birth, you talking about..love to see you defend that one. killing a known felon would be "bad" and "wrong" in your opinion, but pulling a child out in the 8th or 9th month and severing it's spinal cord would be "ok"...? I am pro choice, and even I realize a completely insane abuse of a good law.

three strikes law is a belief? your science says that repeat offenders tend to keep being repeat offenders, and three times convicted is enough to send someone upstate. no more baby sitting for god's sake. sure, we can debate what drug laws should be enforced or eradicated, but three strikes is a proven phenomenon in the penal system.

my challenge stands...give me any area of American life, and I will give you a law that was implemented by a LIBERAL that is based on a belief....talk about clueless, you are so blinded by your own soap box that you can't even think rationally.
