I guess the point I was trying to make is along the same lines as Tackett. We all have deficiencies, we could all do better in most every area of our lives. The holier than thou, unadulterated hatred that is pervasive in this thread is the kind of thing I fail to appreciate. It's not a solution. In fact I see that attitude and vibe as just as much of a problem as the fat kids, or the global warming, or the rain, if not more so.

Hatred like that doesn't just cause suffering in others, it perpetuates suffering in yourself and it's not healthy.

and you both suck.

ok, here it goes. i have been thinking about this and will put my money where my mouth is. i agree its a shame and want to help but want to in a positive way.

one weekend this spring i will supply all the equipment, camping space, shuttle if needed, healthy food options and help with guiding to 3 people on this board and their choice of a "large" kid/young adult. we will take them out on a small hike and climb on saturday, camp that night and will hike and canoe on sunday. one day out will not save the world but we may show them a good enough time they change their lifestyle. it cant hurt....

alan, you have someone you want to bring ? first 3 that let me know will be in. if we have more people that want to sign up then i will need to ask that the people that bring them help with camping and guiding.

so who is in ?

I saw your point and I agree with you. I'm presenting a new point, one that sparked exactly what I was getting from Tackett ... ideas.

Ever stop to think what the difference is between what makes a fat person vs. a skinny one? It can be as little as 100 calories/day. That's something like part of a candy bar or an oreo cookie. It's not gluttony, it's a bit here and a bit there. Maybe it's exercising for 20 minutes instead of 30. These people aren't gluttons, they've just taken in a few too many calories for their energy expenditure for many days.

100 cal/day x 30 days = 3000 cal or ~12 oz.
12 oz/month x 12 months = 9 lbs/yr

I know someone who might really benefit from something like this but unfortunately they're convinced they're too much of a victim to do what "normal" people can do.

To get to that point there ay have been slight overconsuption but I think my biggest pet peeve is people talking about them staying fat. What most people don't realize is that even if they eat less than the average person they will not lose weight because they are burning the same amounts, if not less, than most people. So yes marathon, I agree, it's not gluttony. Peace

Most of us eat just as bad as the unhealthy larger people...

I know I do. I've already had a snickers bar and a bag of chips today.

It's probably already been said...and RRO is game to do something about it...

We need to get the kids outside doing something active (and that doesn't include motorized scooters...)

damn video games and tv...

Anybody hear the story on NPR this morning. An education professor (I think it was in Pittsburgh) is working with a 4th grade class once a week, to teach them about diet and exercise. In the lesson recorded for NPR, he was teaching them about energy and calories ... by lighting a cheese-puff on fire.
