I can't really prove or explain it but caffeine seems to help my endurance some. Drink caffeine before a climb and bourbon after and everything will be ok.

i go to planet smoothie every week before bouldering...it's a shake for dinner for me...but i get an energy booster and a protein supplement in it...my fav is a Frozen Goat which has coffee, chocolate, yogurt, banana...and a couple other things included...I could freakin climb all night after one of these things...

caffeine boosts your metabolism of fat. when you're doing hard, high intesity activity, your body uses glycogen stores in the body for energy. when that runs out (runners know it as "hitting the wall".. you store about 1500-2000 calories worth of glycogen), your body turns to fat for energy, which is usually metabolizes more slowly. caffeine speeds up that part of the equation.

marathonmedic maybe you could add to or correct my take on it?

Which is why it's banned from the Olympics (well, I think athletes can still get their morning java hit).

Caffeine, the most popular natural stimulant, is found in a number of plants throughout the world. The drug was first isolated from coffee in 1821 and was named for that plant, but the effects of coffee and caffeine differ. In many ways coffee seems to be more powerful than refined caffeine or other caffeine-containing plants.

I also remember reading somewhere that caffeine actually blocks an inhibitor that slows the production of ATP thus temporarily allowing for the continuation of cellular fuel.

I used to be addicted to coffee during my first year of college. i would be on my fifth cup, sipping it in class and still falling asleep. so i quit it for 7 years. then i was in france warming up in a french couple's rv and they handed me a cup. i didn't want to be rude so i drank it and it was soooooo good.

after i returned to seattle i have been drinking coffee again. they seem to know a lot about it here. but i try to limit myself to a cup every once and awhile. everything in moderation...except climbing
