Unless I am mistaken I don't think the name is Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but only Chainsaw Masscre. It has a good story behind it that Buster knows better than I, but I'll tell it as I know it.
Jeff Moll, Keith Moll, Buster, etal, with all manner of iron mongery beset the Lode and commenced debauchery back in 1993. At the time the hollow had not been logged in many years (probably 30-40). Shortly after developemnt began the loggers moved in and did selective logging. A affable relationship developed between the loggers and the climbers with cases of beer being offered as peace offerings and each looked on the other with an amused derision of what the other was doing.
Jeff went on to name Harvest and Chainsaw Massacre based on this incident.

Also, I would agree with Astroman's assessment that Chainsaw is one of the most famous 12a's in the country. If not most famous, definitely one of the most done.

I will consider my climbing like a success if on my 70th birthday I can still do chainsaw.

ok thanks for the "useful" info, guess ill try it myself and see... but i hate wasting an afternoon on a sucky climb hope everyone had a good new year.

I would definitely agree with others in that there are better climbs of the grade, but I can assure you that it is not a waste of a day....
1. you're with a friend/partner
2. you're outside
3. more importantly you're climbing(most important is you're climbing in The Red 8) ).
No matter what type of day I have climbing in The Red, it is always better than being in Lex. Just remeber to have fun in the whole pursuit.

If you live in the South you might think it is the most famous .12 in the country, if not, then you've probably never heard of it. Before I ever visited the Red (I'm from the West) the only routes I'd heard about were Table of Colors and Twinkie. Personally, as far as the grade and the Undertow Wall, thought Kick Me in the Jimmie was a better route, way more funky and varied climbing. Still love chainsaw though and thanks for the history lesson, i thought it referred to the stupid cult movie

So you are serious. I see. lurkist, astroman and buster think Chainsaw Massacre is famous...Hmmm... Famous for the red, maybe. Famous for the country I do not agree. Don't even start with the whole "name another freakin 12a in the country more famous?". I am just like you, all I hear about is Chainsaw massacre, Bare Metal Teen and Twinkie. But that is because we all climb at the red most of the time. Think about it this way. Ask someone in Colarodo "What is the most famous 5.7 in all the land?" They might say the Bastille crack is the most famous 5.7 in the country. And the whole time they are telling you about how special the Bastille crack is to the world and how it got its name. You are thinking duh. Roadside Attraction is the best 5.7 in the world, I thought everyone new that.

Then tell me (us) this: Why is it that climbers from ALL OVER THE WORLD come to the Red and ask- Where is Chainsaw???

Never heard of "Chainsaw" but have been on "Fear and Loathing"

What about "Freaky Stylee" at New River? That's probably a more popular 12a.
