CCG: I think you're in for a surprise when you start driving down here. Aren't you coming from NB?

No surprises. I've driven to the New River Gorge in less than 17 hours. how far is the new from the red? 3hours maybe?

It takes at least 17-18 to get to Toronto and another 1.5 or 2 to get to Niagara. I've driven there too....
are you suggesting that it is further than that?

WOW! Colorado Springs, CO is only 16.5h from me (1200 miles). Cincinnati is not the most interesting place to live, but at least it's located within a "reasonable" driving distance to many OTHER cool places. Hell, I am torn between a 2-week trip to CA, or CO, or trying to split 1 week each (packing the motorcycle, mtn. bike, climbing gear, camping gear and the like into the van and hitting the road). I couldn't imagine having to make that kind of drive REGARDLESS of where you wanted to go.

I mean, I've done a 1200 mile "round-trip" in a weekend on my motorcycle through KY, TN and NC, but the purpose of the trip was the roads I was riding on, not the destination.

CCG: I guess I'm surprised you're going around north of the lake. Seems like driving through New York would be shorter. Or are you trying to stay in Canada as long as possible for the beer? That would answer a couple questions...

kato- you are right. it is shorter to go through the US. but crossing the boarder these days just for a few hours drive is often not worth the hassel. It can be a pain in the ass going through the little hick town boarder crossings where 'cowboy jimmy' thinks he's a hero and wants to see what is 'in dem der bags wit da ropes'.

heh! i've always thought all the ropes and gear were a blessing. i drove back to canada once from seneca in a van. we had all our climbing and camping gear plus some gear for some friends. also, we had gone caving and had our wet, muddy, smelly caving gear spread out over top of everything. it smelled so bad, that we drove halfway home in 45F weather with the windows open. we got pulled over at the border for a search. the border guy opened the back doors of the van, took one look - and one smell - at the huge pile of gear in the back, shut the doors, and sent us on our way.
