bear attack?!?!?!
Good grief. Look at the Herald-Leader article today as it is apparent that the hiker acted, at a minimum, questionably. The guy was clearly quite busy taking iphone pics rather than attempting to get himself to safety. If you have an iphone, you know it takes forever to take the pic and then clear the screen to take a new one. Sadly, I suspect the "hiker" is not going to admit he was doing something stupid (even tho his photos prove it). I'd clear out if I encountered a bear not break out my iphone.
I'm an experienced woman; I've been around... well, alright, I might not've been around, but I've been... nearby.

Who cares if he was taking pictures? He was doing so while walking slowly away while not turning away from the bear. That he snapped a few shots while doing so doesn't change anything. He never approached the bear, the bear never bluff charged or grunted, or did anything that a bear would do if it were simply aggitated and wanted the person to go away. And if you see the statement from the wildlife official, who presumable knows something about wildlife, the bear was indeed exhibiting predatory behavior. At the very least from the tags colors/quantity/locations they were able to identify the bear as a male, which should put to rest the thought that it was protecting cubs.
my first thought was that the guy was probably being a dumbass. then when i saw the picture with the caption reading something along the lines of " photos taken right before being mauled" i knew he had to be acting an indiot. bears usually don't f with people when they have dogs...... at least out here in the rockies, or so it seems to me. they always haul ass when encountered
