So with the way he jumped out and the force he hit with, would the helmet have kept him from breaking an ankle/foot?
I've taken a lot of different kinds of falls, and can't recall slamming the rock that hard. Mainly because the fall is a fall, not a jump out. Almost always better to go for it and peel; or perhaps just drop?
Also, I think some of my scariest close-calls have been on 10's and low 11's. The steeper/harder routes seem so much more forgiving (so long as you get far enough off the deck).

You dont need a helmet is you hold on and don't fall.

This guy sure looked like an idiot. That being said, I think his leg was safe when he left the wall so either one of two things happened. Either he managed to catch his heel once he was partway down or he was leaning back from the start and had himself turned halfway over by the time the rope drew tight.
Helmet. Maybe, maybe not. I don't since I think it won't happen to me. Yeah, it's dumb.
His belayer didn't seem to help him out much.
The part that seals it for me is the quote about if you've taken a big whipper, you were therefore in over your head. Spoken like someone who doesn't have much experience whipping when you were comtemplating a clip.
