Anything workable that government has done to control gun crime like register and/or wait should greatly curb the negativity that often accompanies cowardice or/and irascibility.

So moderation of the online guide is what pkananen is suggesting. We should all spend time moderating the comments that someone else deems offensive. I can't wait to receive all of the "Offensive Comment" alerts.........especially from the overly sensitive types.

I do agree that if someone's real name is used in an attack it's not cool. I've removed some pretty nasty comments before because someone was attacking someone in the online guide and using that person's real name. I'd be open to being a little more aggressive with removing stuff like that.

The problem is not only with anonymous comments. There are many flaming comments in the online guide posted under usernames. Just because someone has a username doesn't make them afraid to be obnoxious and it doesn't take their anonymity away.

--I don't think that solution is tenable. Everyone appreciates the administrative conundrum that this situation presents. Let's just live with it. Current status quo might be the best we can do.

Dude, you're comparing gun control to comments in the online guidebook. No way in hell I'm going to put a 24-48 hour hold time on comments in the online guidebook. Why wouldn't that extend to the forums as well? There is plenty of venom spewed there just as there is in the online guidebook.

Now, I'm usually all for random thread hijacking, but I don't think the online guide should be a place for comments about much else other than the route, when it turns into 10 succesive posts of anonomous name calling about something else , i just stop reading, but I could be missing important saftey information later in the comments because it is overshadowed. I second the flag system, lets an impartial third party know whats up, and they can make the judgement over whether or not it provides useful information about the route.

I have to disagree with you on this one caribe, online posting about a rout is no different than online posting in a forum, ya gotta take the good with the bad and only moderate when absolutly necessary. Sure most comments are not helpful but in the end its all just entertainment, one way or the other.

Use the guidebook, ignore the comments if you don't like them. Jeebus. It's not like they matter to your climbing experience. Go out and fucking climb and stop bitching
