chances are very high of them getting out of hand if there is no prominent natural predator to keep them in check.
For instance in patagonia argentinians hunt beaver regularly keeping the pop. down where as the chileans have been fascinated just wacthing them. Also not many people live on the islands where the beaver are having a field day so maybe humans and some bobcats or wildcats will have an effect on keeping the population in check. i only know what has and is happening in southern chile and argentina where the population has exploded in a relativily short period of time.
