You're comparing apples and oranges, Pig. Climbing for one's own personal whatever is simple to understand, and easier to identify with as a fellow climber (want to challenge your mind and physical limits, want to look bootylicious, need more friends and/or lovers, desire to bond with nature, etc.) Saying that you climb for God/god is well, a recondite approach to the climbing or anything. Does God really care so much, unless you're "witnessing" to the masses potentially causing environmental damage at a given crag? There is nothing wrong with making this statement, mind you, but seriously, how does one "climb for Christ"? first, I don't even know what "recondrite" means, so I'll have to pass on that argument...rhunt, can you help me out?
why is climbing for a spiritual reason such as "climbing for god", any different than those who call upon mumbo jumbo from other religions? does anyone challenge sharma's assertion of how his buddhist beliefs affect his climbing?
its not apples and oranges.....its very similar....our society has taught people that we have to attach a "significance" or "reason" to why we do things..any thing...how about climbing for....no reason at all....
for most people, climbing is a diversion or stress reliever..nothing more.
to act as if it has a higher, metaphysical aspect is pure bull****.....the adrenaline rush of climbing can be had in 1,000 different arenas....the "nature" can be had in 800 different ways...the spiritual can be found in 1,257 different places... I love climbing, but too many people like to make up "reasons" as to why they climb, as if they have to justify this waste of time...the energy we put into climbing could be building a homeless shelter, curing AIDS, world peace, wtc, but we choose to selfishly spend inordinate amounts of time on the rock..its a shame, but it is what we call life...
