Top roping is for sisssys! There Wes are you happy I said it :!:

Seriously though I learned a long time ago, with my wife, that lead climbing isn't for everyone. I personally enjoy the hell out of it. I like the mental challenge and rope management that comes with it..and you're right if you want to ever do more than just go "cragging" you've go to be a competent lead climber. My wife enjoys climbing too and she has done plenty of 11's clean on T/R. I use to try to get her to lead all the time b/c I thought it was more fun..well it wasn't for her. After I got that through my thick male skull we had a much better time at the cliff :D

As for difficulty and difference... lead climbing is harder than T/Ring, so is red pointing harder than pink pointing (another discussion for another time  ) but the fact of the matter is climbing is climbing and it is about the movement and position on the rock.... weather you are protected by TR, Draws, cams, or a bouldering pad you are still climbing and hopefully having FUN :!:
Lest we all forget... climbing is a mostly meaningless pursuit that we do for fun.

TRing is cool if that's what you want to do. JH, I hope that if you are doing a lot of TRing it is through your draws and not through the anchors...that is how the anchors wear through so quickly...

Personally I have to avoid TRing as much as possible..it messes up my lead head.

good point rhunt. along the same lines I don't know why people don't rap off of the climb more often insted of being lowered. This seems like such and easy thing to do to avoid wear.

I've heard it said that top roping is the future of hard rock climbing. Think about all the nearly blank faces out there that are too high to boulder and too hard to stop and clip protection...

If it's within my ability to lead, I'll pull the rope and lead it. If I'm running short on time or I don't think I can lead it without alot of hanging, I'll just second it. I'm trying to get all the leading experience that I can right now.

Indeed, I was wondering the same thing: too many people use bolts / anchors to climb. It doesn't take much to set it up right - which is setting up an anchor. A little rope management goes a long way for the anchors. Save our anchors, please!

Here's another reason why more climbers should rap instead of being lowered after cleaning the anchors:

Your rope will last you way longer
! Enough with all that detestation ALREADY !
Smile & be thankful for what you have.

I've been following Loren up some .11 trad routes lately, and it's awesome, but I look at it as practice and preparation for when I start to lead hard trad. Even with the limited amount of trad leading I've started doing recently, I enjoy it more than toproping. It makes me think more and focus more on the route and what it's like, so that I can judge when, where, and what to place. I think it's much more fun than toproping the same route, plus you get to place the gear and let your second worry about getting it back. :P

Truth be known. I do wish that I was a stronger leader.T/R'ing is not the same as leading. I never said it was. But it is climbing. And it is fun. That being said........Let me tell you about todays climbing woman. She likes to be empowered. If you let her hang your rope for you and make her look good then she will forever be greatful to you and show "favor" to you at some later time.
All women feel misplaced in todays society. They Know that they are capable. By you letting them feel capable and included they will appreciate it.
No one wants to just second after some "rope-gun stud" If you go to the crag and scream like a little girl on slab. You will be appreciated. I don't know of any woman out there who doesn't beat herself up because of her fear of lead. I just want all you women and (guys) new climbers to realize that this is about fun. So have fun!!! 8)

If you arent leading you might as well be in a gym. You arent going to learn to lead till you start doing more of it.I toprope occasionaly, mostly I lead. Sometimes I'm lucky and get to clean trad harder than I lead. I choose what I do and I assume the risk and a second should have the same right.
