ynp1...ten years ago my brother died of pancreatic cancer. he was 37. at the time I was still on the fence about god, but preferred to believe in him over nohting at all. in my parents church, there was also a 4 year old girl struggling with cancer. so the church prayed for them both. I also prayed for my brother.
4 months after finding out he had cancer, my brother died. the little girl lived. i never understood 'god's logic"...same people praying for both young people with cancer..one goes...one stays. when I asked beleivers "why", they stumbled and mumbled about god's will, brohter is better off, god knows best, he has great plans....etc
it was at that moment I gave up hope, and I feel alot better.
btw, that little girl died of her cancer at the age of 7. if that isn't a twisted god, what is?
christians either try to explain away god's messed up decisions, or they leave it to the mysterious unknown of the great deity......those with a thinking brain, doesn't that bother you in the least? and I mean that in all sincerity, as someone who has walked in the church as a youth. I now say, I didn't leave god, but if he exists, he left me. don't feel sorry for me. feel grateful that I came to my senses.

Re: Jesus H
On thing's for sure, if there is a god he has a really poor understanding of cell cycle regulation and carcinogenesis. Not to mention earthquakes, floods, the psychology of serial killers & dictators, birth defects, childhood diarrhea, viruses, bacteria, pedophiles, how to feed all the inhabitants of planet earth, and so on. Or maybe god is actually evil. Or dumb. Or it's all mythology like every other religion (except Taoism, which is a philosophy). Let's speculate blindly for 20 more pages about this. Or let's do something about our own problems and stop idly praying for superman to come bail us out of this mess.
Sorry to hear about your brother, Kipp.

Re: Jesus H
I've never understood the prayer thing. If you believe everything is in God's hands and God is all-knowing, why bother praying? If he has a plan, and you trust God fully, aren't you really asking him to change his plan? Don't you think he knows you want the little kid to not die of cancer? And if the kid is healed, you say it's the power of prayer, but if the kid dies, it was "in God's plan". Or maybe not enough people prayed? So God is a prick? I just don't get it.
I also don't understand the biblical fundamentalists. I actually had a discussion with someone here (because in far eastern KY, there are far more bible literalists than anywhere else) about how evolution was false because "show me the missing link"...but then in the same breath they talk about the bible mentioning unicorns. Well, so me the flippin' unicorn fossil...

Re: Jesus H
LOL! That whole "missing link" defense is pitifully ignorant and at least two decades behind current research... the fossil record for almost every form of life (especially hominids) grows more complete every year. Only the truly stupid or those willfully in denial could deny its obvious implications.
My favorite is when they insist carbon-dating is a conspiracy!! The wanton desperation of it all...

The best explaination I've heard about radioisotopic dating is that the rates of decay have slowed down since creation, so even though some of the heavier radioisotopes that are capable of dating objects in the millions of years, well, actually if we took into account the decrease in decay rate, the earth really is only 6,000 years old...
Yikes. Somebody call Scotland Yard, science has been butchered...

Now we just need an app for Christians to accept Christ, you know....just after each sin and stuff.

Re: Jesus H
Maybe I should write the Christian app for Android and Windows Phone? We could wage a digital war with the Christians and their devices on one side and the pretentious iPhone Catholics on the other. Check your iPhone at the door and be saved by the one true father. Meanwhile the kids are sneaking out the back of the tent revival with a pocket full of iPhone's to sell on eBay.
Re: Jesus H
Rep. Giffords husband said our prayers are being heard for his wife, and for us to not stop. What do you guys say to this? he is leading the next space launch you realize.
Should we boycott and protest his silliness? tell him that is ridiculous to think prayer is helping his wife...come on you atheists...don't quit now. What do we tell him, and I will pass along your sentiments in a letter.

If you want any sort of political power, you must praise jebus. The masses won't have it any other way.pigsteak wrote:Rep. Giffords husband said our prayers are being heard for his wife, and for us to not stop. What do you guys say to this? he is leading the next space launch you realize.

Well, that explains the steady decline of NASA in recent years.
