I think the current debate has been stated. What does the flag mean to me? It means some people just won't let it go. It also means I'll have Bocephus songs stuck in my head when I see the symbol.

Pigsteak - my point was - obviously you never heard those expressions in Bloomington(remember I've been there). I just find it odd and funny that you move to Lexington Ky and hear them for the first time.

It belongs in a museum and should not be displayed in any manner. The war ended in 1865, it's now 2007 and all 50 states contribute to what we know as the United States today.

The flag and its predecessors such as "Bonnie Blue" did not manifest as a representation of hate. The KKK is the culprit for the negative feeling you have today when you see the flag.

My two cents:

Kentucky is the South. Not the deep south but not the midwest, it is a southern state. In fact, it is arguable that Kentucky lost more then any other state in the civil war because we lost our identity and were rivalling Virginia in economic and educational advancement prior to the war. After the war, we became a state torn between the union and confederate sentiments but ravaged by our failure to truly commit to either. Our Capitol in Frankfort was built with civil war reparations from the US government. We never recovered economically or educationally.

As for the flag, the meaning is whatever people put into it. I was taught that the civil war was over successionism and economic division. That was my educational upbringing. I've since learned, that slavery was a significant factor. 8)

Sprag, do you think the rednecks with the confederate flags hanging from the gun rack on their truck have any idea what successionism and economic division had to do with the civil war. Most people were taught that Honest Abe's only fight was against slavery.

Though there are plenty of examples everywhere that help feed into that ignorant redneck stereotype, you fool yourself into thinking everyone with respect for the confederate flag is a racist in a truck with no education.

That, in my view reeks of hypocrisy and prejudice.

maybe I was to quick to assume that everyone with a confederate flag hanging off of there truck was a redneck, some are probably hillbillies. I am not saying they are all racist or uneducated, but in my experience the people who flaunt their southern heratige in the form of the controversial flag are largely living up to their rebellious self fulfillment prophecy. We could take a random sample out in slade some day and I would bet my trad rack that the overwhelming majority are stubborn red necks who are trying to piss people off under the guise of supporting their roots. Personally, I say to each his own and could really care less, but like pigsteak, I often get that feeling in my gut when I see the flag accompanying some jackass behavior, but I am sure it is because of my yankee roots and not just another reason to dislike someone who is acting like a jackass.

Too (not to) many things to criticize in that post but the irony in this statement is huge.....

...transplanted Yankee's or infiltrators who understand very little concerning the culture they condemn?

Come play on our rocks, boat in our lakes, and then talk shit about the natives. A typical Southerner would prolly have a little better manners.
