one other brand to think about is Hyundai. they have one of the best quality records in the industry (better than Toyota and Honda) and are pretty cheap but get flack because...well, they're Hyundai. i know a guy who has put lots of miles on one and beat the crap out of it and its still going strong. you'd probably be able to pick a used one up cheap

Jeep's new patriot 4X4 is available in a manual transmission which pushes it to close to 30mpg. It's decent size, I was in one the other day. 4x4s start at around 17k.
Built on the Dodge Nitro platform.
I may buy it, but I think I should wait for the next model year since it is new.

I hear ya on waiting till cars are not new, I would seriously consider the VW Diesel if I could find it used

You and about everybody else. A newer VW diesel is hard to get a hold of. I still drool over the 4 door TDI Golf and the TDI Jetta wagons.

I drove a tdi golf for a couple years. it really did kick ass. I had a long commute that was mostly highway driving and averaged 45 to 48 mpg with most every tank. The tdi engine was strong too, plenty of power for that little car.

Yep, TDI wagon looks like a nice ride. Maybe it is the suburban yuppie mom coming out in me, but I really dig the new volvo XTC 4 x 4 wagons.
The the 4 x 4 civic is a bad ass ride for sure. This guy I met in Vedauwoo a couple years ago has one, and he can rally that thing to just about anywhere.

the new TDI's are actually bigger than the old ones. I can't remember the difference in horse power or more importantly torque but the old ones were a 1.8 L and the new ones are 2.0 L. If you're looking for the absolute best mpg out of a TDI the older, smaller ones probably do a bit better.
