Y'know, despite the fact that it makes you feel better the reality of a handgun is that it is far more likely to be used to kill you or a member of your family than for you to ever use it to defend yourself. Just get a dog. They are much safer for you and your loved ones.
And if you feel better about yourself if you're afraid of the world then that's all you. Would you really blame yourself if someone raped your wife, slinga? Are you that stupid? You can't control the world. Would you blame yourself if she got into a fatal car accident while you were away? That's actually very likely to happen whereas the chances of a violent crime being committed against her in your house are very very slim. You would blame yourself for the actions of another? What if the intruder got to your gun first and shot her full of holes? Probably it would be a friend of yours or a relative since that's the most likely person to commit a violent crime against a woman in her own home. Would you blame yourself then? Sorry, but the whole "gun makes you safer" argument is complete and utter bullshit. Logic and facts prove it. But then again, logic and facts aren't the American way, are they?
Don't get me wrong, I grew up around guns and I own a couple, but they have always been for hunting only. It would take me so long (and this is for safety) to load one of my shotguns to use it in self defense it would be much more useful to me to use it as a stick. And I know if someone found my shotgun after breaking into my house they would have a hell of a time figuring out where the shells are... not that quail shot is the best for large mammals.
Sorry. Handguns are not a smart thing to own.

From your statement I'll assume you were not home, no one was hurt and your personal property means little or nothing to you. Personal property aside, personal injury the issue, can you honestly still give Yasmeen the same advice knowing these are possibilities??? I have the basic ADT system, I could not live with myself, if while I'm away climbing or whatever, someone was to invade my home and attack my wife. So Pigsteak, If having an alarm to help out, when I have to sleep,(god forbid) or leave town, is paranoid, then the next time you climb, don't back anything up, especially those old worn runners or rusted pitons. I'm glad you guys live in a great neighborhood where you go to bed at night to the sounds of koom-bi-yah, but I think Yasmeen and alot of us have to have a little more sense/caution when addressing this issue. Yasmeen, your a climber, how many times did you carry extra gear, that you were glad you had when needed??? how many times did it feel good knowing it was there, even if you did'nt. I'll finish with an old Army saying "Better your back sore form carrying too much ammo, than your death from not carrying enough" Good luck!!! I have a local Cincy Guy if your interested, pm me and I'll give you his #'s
Alan, I never mentioned a gun one time on here, I suggested an alarm system that will both alert police and give audible warning to the occupant in the house and act as a deterent to the intruder to stay. I would blame myself if there were opputunities to make my home a harder target, and I did nothing, trusting my wifes well being to the police, human good will, and fate??? yeah, right!! I would also blame myself if her car needed brakes, but I neglected replacing them, and she got into a wreck because of it. I got a dog, she's not quite up to speed yet(6 mos) with her and the alarm I'm satisfied. I believe having a little caution will never be out of style, so If I'm thought "stupid" for loving my wife and looking after her in an ever changing world, I'll remain alive and well amongst the idiots, but thanks for sharing!!!!!!

Alarm systems are as effective as the phone line, which is the first thing a determined thief will cut. A thief can get in and out with all your expensive crap before the cops arrive.
ADT sucks. They are unbelievably slow to respond. The jewlery store my wife used to work at had them, and their response time was horrible.
Living in a bad neighborhood greatly increases the chance you'll have a break in. That should be obvious. Of course, living in a really nice neighborhood makes you more of a high payout target to thieves.
Doggies have a cheaper monthy fee than alarm companies.

DHOYNE,
I thought of the cut phone wire, so we have a battery/hard wired(in case they cut power) cell phone back up that has both our phones to call out on. The guy I mentioned to Yasmeen is a security professional, I explained my needs, wants, worries, and budget and he has made me alot more secure with my home. I set it off the first night by total ignorance, 44 seconds came the first call for my verbal code and dismissal of police response, 1 minute later my wifes phone was called as a back up to my approval. I had heard several stories about ADT as well, all of which were similar to your statement, I asked my installer and he said it can depend alot on who the sub contracted company that sold/installed the system.
I understand it to mean that not every body installs/programs/sets up the system the way they should, so it can be not doing any and all the things it should when it should. I have had it just over a year and I'm totally satisfied, my wife and I are not afraid of the world( as some have said) hell I actually have very few personal fears, but While knowing I can't control the world, I can at'least try to leave a smaller margin of error. As far as response time goe's was it adt's or the police's response time, ask Allen about them, he's the resident authority on Cops....

Yeah, I have a CSS (canine security system) as well. While they are good for "alerting" us to someone's presence (using a series of very specialized high decibel auditory signals which travel through the air and into our ears where they are picked up by special mechanisms in our limbic system, located near our cerebellum......ok, they bark and we hear it) , they are most likely to just lick and shed on the intruder. If he's really unlucky, he might get puked or peed on. Plus, our CSS is really only effective when we are home.
As for guns, I prefer knives. I am mostly a light sleeper so if you are going to sneak past me, you had better be able to float.

A security system is something I've never ever considered, but I can imagine that if you were stuck in a bad neighborhood, something like that might be desirable. Another option for valuables is to simply carry adequate insurance and store unreplaceable items in a small safe.
For personal safety, I think it's already been mentioned that a big dog is a great option. We've got a chihuahua, so I've got an unloaded .45 Ruger in a dresser drawer with two clips beside it. I can load it and jack one in in pitch darkness. The daughter has her S&W Model 60 in her dresser. I know she's got it loaded, but I don't know if she's got .357s or .38s in it.
