Blind divisions. You have no idea if you will get bumped if you send a v3, or if that will put you at the top of a lower divsion. Thus, you can just climb whatever you want. Only a few people really cheat, most people just don't want to be a the very bottom of the next higher catagory. If you are a v3 boulderererer, you are just SOL, unless you just do easy problems, and hope to win beginner.

hmmm..just seems to take all the "vibe" away for me. not going out and cranking your best a given day.

i still vote for prizes for the truly hard core at the top, and random prizes for those of us just out for some lost skin. when I worked at a gym, it seemd a shame to give away ropes and shoes to a kid who climbed 5.7 after 6 months, but nothing to the struggling 5.11 climber who entered advanced and finished 13th.

That would work for me as well. I have a much better chance of winning something via blind luck, then I ever would with my (lack of) mad skilz. Unless I was a low life, and entered beginners, that is.

Man, congratulations to everyone! I'm really psyched for Claire! The woman just had a baby for goodness sakes. That's fantastic.

didn't mean to derail this thread.I suppose wes and I should have discussed this another place. but I am betting most of us have had the same thoughts, at least silently of "now why are they in that division?"...don't worry, I do take my own advice on this one...if I don't like it, then I don't compete.

I will have to completely agree with Pigsteak on this issue. Winning one of the Triple crown comps is based on pure luck. Except for the open category. You really never know where the cut off line between getting bumped and winning is going to be. For example, I had a friend at Hound Ears who entered in beginner. He scored exactly ten points higher than the winner of Beginner, but he got bumped because is score was past the cut off line.

I went to a comp at the Raliegh Rock Yard a couple of months ago. I busted my butt even with a semi hurt tendon and tons of training to come in second in open. Obviously the competition was low, but anyway. I walked out with a 20 dollar gift certificate to some place I will never go, while some girl who it was her first day ever climbing got a rope and some junior kids who can only do V1 with open feet got 50 bucks and shoes.

Its definitly not all about the prizes but this is the only sport that I can think of where adults that aren't very good are getting the same prizes as people who have been training for years to build their abilities.

I am not sure what the answer is, but I do believe that the situation is kind of strange.

Lastly, every comp I have ever been to was well worth it no matter what I won or didn't win. They are always fun and good training.

not to mention great people.. that's why i go. the prizes i win don't come home in my hands or the back of my car..
