What I love about running is you can meditate while running. It's a peaceful place.

Joost,
I hope you are coming with someone who has outdoor experience.
5.9s in the Red are scarier than the 5.10s.
Do a search on "toproping" in the online guide and you'll find that there aren't as many as you'd hope for nor necessarily concentrated.
I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Don't worry! There are almost no routes in the Red where you can walk to the top and set up a toprope - but you should be able to meet people at Miguel's to climb with, and they can set up the routes for you. If you can climb 5.9 (French 5) in the gym then you'll be able to get up the 5.10a/5.10b here (but with a really bad pump in your arms!) Most of the easy routes have no specific 'crux' to stop you.

"Trad climbing" (or "traditional) is climbing with nuts and cams in cracks for protection, not bolts. It will seem hard, because it's very different to climb a crack, compared to the bolt-on holds in a gym. Because it's uncommon in most of Europe, you should try it while you're here! If you fall in love with trad, then you can go on climbing trips to England and sit in pubs drinking tea, then beer, waiting for the rain to stop!

Snipe hunting is a whole different thing - I think that you can only do it at night, and it helps if you have had some beers. It's interesting, because it's different than most types of hunting - no guns!

You asked about coyboy hats and talking loud - that's more like Texas or the imaginary America from John Wayne movies. (OK, we do all talk loud!) The other Americas that you've probably seen on TV and in movies are "New York America" and "Los Angeles America". Kentucky is different than all of those. The climbers at the Red are mostly very different from the people who live in the area, but you'll meet a few of the 'locals' at the different stores in the area. Because the area is isolated, there is a lot of poverty and a few drug addicts (home-made methamphetame - called "crank"). There are religious extremists, including people who hold poisonous snakes to show how they 'trust God'. But there are also people who would give you the shoes off of their feet and their only food if you needed it. It's complicated - it's a great way to see 'real America'.

I think that you will not need a written reservation, but if you are worried, you might want to call Miguel ( (606) 663-1975 ) He is a really nice guy and he might be able to send you some sort of written reservation.

Joost,
This is Kentucky, not Texas! We run around bare foot and need lots of dental work. As for the cigars you can't bring, K.Y.'s cash crop is the same stuff in those cigars, we already have plenty. You could help us with some plans for dykes, our's arent holding up well, and if we smoke those cigars, we just might eat the tulips   Anyway, good luck when you do get here!

When I was A Tenderfoot Boy Scout on our first trip to camp I was taken out one night with some other gumbies, blindfolded, taken into the woods and told to find a snipe and return to camp.
The only problem was noone told me to takeoff my blindfold.
It was a fucking nightmare. I never did see asnipe.
