That's why the factory installs locking steering columns in all cars. Besides, if they want my car, I don't think a window will stop them.

i would hate to be *that* victim, but at least 2 things could happen.

1) my insurance company covers my loss (errr...would they? i mean, if i left my doors unlocked....)
2) these guys get it for grand theft auto instead of some small-time, less-than-felony theft.

I saw a thing on the news yesterday where local police were using bait cars to catch car thieves. They were outfitted with several cameras and when a thief gets in the car to try and steal it the car automatically locks them inside and catches them on film. They showed some footage and it was pretty funny watching the dude try and figure a way out of the car while the cops approached. They said the conviction rate was 100%.

How would the insurance company know your car was unlocked?

Oh, in my panic, I'd probably tell them.

The fact that your car isn't locked wouldn't make it any less illegal to steal stuff from it or steal the car itself. I don't think an insurance policy would deny coverage for a car being unlocked, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

They might try but if the poilcy doesn't specifically state a denial of coverage for thefts from an unlocked car the court will interpret the policy in favor of the insured since the policy is contract of adhesion.(At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it).

There has been a sting operation at Jackson Falls, IL where some people were caught. And some people were caught somehow at T-wall also. It might not be a permanent solution, but it definitely seemed to have curved the trends at those places, because most likely, its the same people that keep coming back.

i want to roll down my windows 1/2 way, set my alarm, and manually unlock my doors so that they won't break the windows but try the handle instead and then when they open the door the alarm would go off. i don't keep much in my car so they'd probably take off rather than dig around for hidden stuff. figure that might be the way to go.
