And what will you have done at the end? You'll have wasted a whole day inside. And what effect will that have had on Paul or any other climber? None. If you're going to waste a day, it would be better wasted flipping through the pages of a grammar book.
....and a dictionary.

by the way, which is the best form of running? which do you think requires the most training? which requires the strongest athlete? which winner should be considered "the best runner in the world"?
a: the 100m dash
b: a 10k
c: a marathon
d: an ultra-marathon
well of course it's A, right? they require strength and explosive power that's unrivaled. they train extensively and powerfully. they compete with some of the fittest people in the world. surely, the winner of a 100m must be the best runner in the world.
but then again, it has to be B. what other group needs to weigh the time gain against the strain of fatigue as precisely as a 10k-er. the stamina and power and rawness is definitely impressive, if not awe inspiring. it's decided then; the best runner in the world title must rest in the hands of a 10k runner.
on the other hand, running a marathon is perhaps the most demanding of all. year of training in general on top of months of training for an individual race test every aspect of the body, from power and endurance to resilience and robustness. calorically speaking, it pushes the upper thresholds of the body. the competitors are all extremely fit and effecient and their bodies are some of the most refined to be found among all athletes. the marathon-er is to be crowned running king.
yet there is the ultramarathon, choice D, that has to be considered. looking at them more closely, they train the longest and endure the most trying aspects of running, physically and mentally. also, strategy is key: when to eat, when to drink, changing of shoes, clothing, mindset. though they have help and rests (in the form of people providing them with meals and shoes and medical attention), they still epitomize the essence of running: to push the limits of the human body by running. the spotlight of glory should fall upon this hero's shoulders.
so who is the best runner: a, b, c, or d? the answer is: none of them and all of them. each should be considered within their own discipline. to say any one of them is the best would be to be actively ignoring the qualities of the other disciplines. but i guess that'd require humility and respect..

Let's settle this once and for all.
Hashplant, meet me on top of the Hueco boulder at high noon on Saturday for a battle to the death. I will bring the broken glass for our boxing gloves, ala Kickboxer, and you will bring the hotties who will hold the signs.
Unless the weather is nice, in which case I'm going climbing on real rock and we'll have to postpone.

Very good point Paul3eb! So true! I'd consider the one who could do all of them to be the most well rounded athlete and the most talented. Or better yet, the one who is having the most fun would be the best!

Call me a gumby, again, but there's something here I don't understand. By definition, climbing means to move up something. We all do it one hold at a time. It's move, move, move, moveflagreposition, move, and maybe fall. This pattern doesn't change no matter how you protect yourself from injury or whether you're pulling on granite, sandstone or plastic. To top it off, our climbing areas are in danger both outdoors as well as indoors and we bicker about who's _really_ climbing and who's just posing. What's the deal? Did I miss something or are people being extra petty these days?

you can teach some one not to shit there pants when they are run out on shitty gear and the hook they are sitting on is about to pop? you cant teach somebody to have a strong lead head. some people have it and others dont. you can get a stronger lead head by climbing a lot, but that is about it.
