I know quite a number of sponsered climbers. I am friends with one of the members of the north face team. they get equipment, paychecks, and trips paid for.

members of the mad rock team get paid for every time they get a picture in media source that has them wearing madrock gear and free shoes.

from conversations with some of the folks, it is a fair amount of work. a climbing resume is a must, you are pressured to perform, and if you compete you are pressured to do well.

but if you are going to have a job and you have the talent, it would be a pretty good job.

of course i also know a few climbers who are stronger than many of the sponsered climbers but shun the limelight. they do not spray and avoid getting pictures of themselves in the mags. they climb cause they love it and don't care for the material side of things.
