Interesting and good to know regarding the increase in Copperhead sightings - we are making our third trip to the Red this weekend, and although I've yet to see any, I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for 'em.

On a side note, has anyone noticed Copperheads hiding in cracks on routes? I'd hate to reach up for a clip or a hold and have one sitting there staring at me - my understanding is that most snakes (Rattle, Copperheads, etc) prefer to be left alone and will usually only attack if provoked, cornered, or stepped on.

A month or two ago I reached up for the second jug on Recoil at Torrent, and touched something soft. I matched hands at the 12-foot level, looked up and was face-to-face with a pretty damn big copperhead. Needless to say I dropped from the jug and stayed off that route for the day!

On the plus side, copperhead season is winding down. there have been no more this year than any other year IMO. There's always shitloads here in summer.

The copperheads that really freak me out are the ones that hang out in trees, usually 2 to 8 ft off the ground.
